The Path Difference

Two-point source interference occurs when waves from one source meet up with waves from another source. If the source of…

Mathematics of Two-Point Source Interference

Anatomy of a Two-Point Source Interference Pattern This unit of The Physics Classroom Tutorial focused on the nature of light…

Blue Skies and Red Sunsets

The sun emits light waves with a range of frequencies. Some of these frequencies fall within the visible light spectrum and thus…

Color Subtraction

The previous lesson focused on the principles of color addition. These principles govern the perceived color resulting from the mixing…

Color Addition

Color perception, like sound perception, is a complex subject involving the disciplines of psychology, physiology, biology, chemistry and physics. When you look…

Light Absorption, Reflection, and Transmission

We have previously learned that visible light waves consist of a continuous range of wavelengths or frequencies. When a light wave with…

Visible Light and the Eye’s Response

As mentioned in the first section of Lesson 2, our eyes are sensitive to a very narrow band of frequencies within…

The Electromagnetic and Visible Spectra As discussed in Unit 10 of The Physics Classroom Tutorial, electromagnetic waves are waves that are capable of…

Thin Film Interference

The emphasis of Lesson 1 of this unit is to present some evidence that has historically supported the view that…

Two Point Source Interference

Wave interference is a phenomenon that occurs when two waves meet while traveling along the same medium. The interference of waves causes the…

Light Waves and Color

How Do We Know Light is a Wave? Wavelike Behaviors of Light An age-old debate that has persisted among scientists is related…

Closed-End Air Columns

In the previous part of Lesson 5, the formation of a standing wave patterns in an open-end instrument was discussed. The…
